Time for Some Tea...

I had an assignment due at midnight.  It's officially past midnight and I have not turned it in meaning it is late.  For me, this is usually something that would be the end of the world.  I made this happen.  I've known about this assignment for a while now.  I have been thinking about it, but I hadn't put anything to paper.  I started working on it Wednesday.  I didn't get much done.  I worked Thursday but didn't get much further.  I left it until literally the last minute and guess what happened today?  Life.  I was supposed to work on my other assignment after I dropped Mark off at work before I went into work at the school.  My tire light came on and since I had already blown up my tires recently, I decided to take it to an auto shop.  Apparently, Fridays are very popular.  Both auto shops I visited were busy so I wasted time but had to get going to work.  I arrived at work a minute late, but ultimately on time.  When I left work - you guessed it - flat tire.  Flash forward another hour and I was finally on my way home.  Of course, Fridays also mean I have to teach.  Luckily I only had one class scheduled, but I was obligated to teach it.  Oddly enough my student didn't show up today so I continued working on my assignment in the background waiting for her to show up.  I ended at 11p and had about 1/2 of my assignment completed so I kept going and made it to nearly 2/3.  At 11:45 I realized I needed to compile everything together and get it turned in.  I checked our assignment on Blackboard and the due date says it's due on Sunday.  At the beginning of the semester, our professor explicitly told us not to trust the dates on BB...the dates on the syllabus are correct.  With that being said, a sigh of relief came over me.  I'd still be able to turn it in tomorrow.  I checked our syllabus and 5% of my grade will be deducted for every day it is late.  I cannot turn in this assignment 2/3 finished.  5% of my grade is worth turning it in late.  It will be turned in tomorrow, but sometimes we simply cannot make deadlines no matter how hard we try.

Why Creativity?

Let’s continue the discussion on WHY teachers should be putting creativity into the classroom.  This week’s theme was a continuation of last weeks and made some excellent points of the necessity of Creativity in the Classroom. We were linked to another TED Talk, this time with Catherine Thimmesh .  She referenced Ken Robinson’s talk I listened to last week in which he questioned if schools were killing creativity.  Thimmesh offered valuable advice in which she remarked that we can use what we have creativity-wise and add it to the existing structure of lessons.  I mentioned something similar in my last post about the fact that obviously we have to teach the curriculum, but the curriculum does not specify exactly how we have to teach it.  In fact, the curriculum is written wonderfully for our purposes by specifying that the student “will be able to…”  This is excellent news because that means we aren’t required to teach everything a specific way....
