Ready for Take-Off! (Citizen)

How I feel about my current semester...scared of the unknown.

Before I start, I should note that my professor can see my blog, but I'm still going to be honest.  Obviously, this is a professional blog either way so it's not like I planned on bashing all of my professors online.  Truthfully I don't have anything bad to say about any of my professors past and present at CSU.  I have struggled in a few classes, but I still had glowing reviews about the professors.
My Creativity Education class is completely online this year and my professor, Dr. Pleis (hi!) is perfect for it.  From the very beginning, I could tell she's in touch with the online world and will be providing us with many technology resources we'll be able to use in our future classrooms.  This year she has designed a curriculum where we "launch" into space and visit galaxies to conduct "missions".  For a typical college student, this probably would sound silly or even immature.  For an education major - THIS IS BRILLIANT.  I can easily see developing this curriculum in an Elementary class but it can also work easily for Early Childhood which I'm going into as well.  Middle Schoolers would love this.  High schoolers might think it's corny, but it doesn't have to be a "space" theme and could easily evolve around passions highschoolers are into.  (What are highschoolers into other than Tik Tok Challenges?!?)
This is officially our second week and one of our missions was to create a blog - whaaaa?  A blog??  I CAN DO THAT.  So here I am!  We have other missions to do like a Twitter chat, videos, and so many different websites we can use.  I want to talk specifically about the website Dr. Pleis created for our class.
We go to each "Galaxy" which is essentially what we are studying for the week.  Week 1 was all about Introduction to the Course.  Week 2 is all about creativity and creating the definition.  I could EASILY see developing this into a 3rd-grade e-learning curriculum.  I like that we are able to choose our missions for the week, but obviously, for my 3rd graders, I would have specific assignments due each week.  The Galaxy would guide them through lessons via video taught by me or fun video resources.  I also love the idea of the students having a "blog" where they journal each week about what they are learning.  I would use ideas from my reading class and have "prompts" for them to use in their online journal.  I love how interactive this website is even though I'm not in class face to face.  I also can easily see a way to make this collaborative with students being able to have a "chat" area through our class website where they can post accomplishments and virtually "talk" to their other classmates.  There honestly is so much potential and I want to soak it all in right now but I know I have other subjects I have to study, so I'll take it week by week.
So as you read this blog, notice I'll be marking "labels" to the side.  When something has to do specifically with my Creativity class, you'll see "EDUC 324" as a label.  There might be a topic that is kind of "random" but in reality, it's a topic I have to think about for the week and I'm choosing to blog about it.
I have officially "launched" into space so with that being said: TO INFINITY AND BEYOND!

Why Creativity?

Let’s continue the discussion on WHY teachers should be putting creativity into the classroom.  This week’s theme was a continuation of last weeks and made some excellent points of the necessity of Creativity in the Classroom. We were linked to another TED Talk, this time with Catherine Thimmesh .  She referenced Ken Robinson’s talk I listened to last week in which he questioned if schools were killing creativity.  Thimmesh offered valuable advice in which she remarked that we can use what we have creativity-wise and add it to the existing structure of lessons.  I mentioned something similar in my last post about the fact that obviously we have to teach the curriculum, but the curriculum does not specify exactly how we have to teach it.  In fact, the curriculum is written wonderfully for our purposes by specifying that the student “will be able to…”  This is excellent news because that means we aren’t required to teach everything a specific way....
